Mama Don't Take My Kodachrome Away!

Counterfeit Kit Challenge April Kit Reveal & Blog Hop

Welcome!  Each month CKC offers us a chance to copy one of those fancy kits from an exclusive kit club by just using the goodies we already own in our stash.  It is a great way to stash-bust and truly pushes the creative envelope in the way you think about your supplies.  Then we play a round of show and tell in the form of a blog hop to inspire you to play along with us.  So, sit back, relax and be inspired!  If you've arrived from Lisa J's blog, you are on the right track.  You will find the whole list of Master Forgers at the end of this post should you get lost along the way.  Now, let's get to it!

Boy, Paul Simon must be really bummed these days.  Mama DID take his Kodachrome away.  Poor guy!  But alas, we do have the almighty digital camera.  Digital photography offers no restrictions on how many shots we snap, instant gratification and the power to edit to the point of practically re-creating the whole image.  Not like the old days when Paul still had his Kodachrome.  You could never be sure what kind of picture you took.  Film and processing was expensive and required a bit of trust and patience as you dropped that little envelope with your precious memories inside that dark slot at the Fotomat.  It's actually quite amazing that the photos would make their way back to their rightful owner!  This leads me to the April Kit inspired  by Gossamer Blue's March Kit:

When studying over the kit, my eye was first drawn to the black and white in the view master reel, polaroid picture, letters and diagonal striped paper.  However, you can quickly see how much exciting color surrounds those elements.  As a tribute to color photography from the "old days", I'm going to give you back your Kodachrome and "those nice bright colors" - even if it is just in the form of this kit.  Presenting...

Kodachrome

Let's zoom in and take a look at the paper selection.
See the "greens of summer" in there!

I followed Gossamer Blue's lead in regard to color palette pretty closely.  Their kit has a digital file set featuring a view master reel and polaroid picture, so I included papers I had in my stash with the same images.  If you check out their site, you'll also find a cool add-on kit that features all black and white products.  The papers with polka dots, stripes and a solid distressed black all help make that connection.

Now let's check out the embellishments...

Several varieties of Thickers in black and white and some of my favorite Tiny Type knock-off letters from Joann's will be perfect for my title work.  The sheet in the foreground contains more Tiny Type-like letters from a huge paper pad.  They are a perfect copy of the ones in the inspiration.

This kit wouldn't be complete without wood veneer cameras!  I also included black and white polka dot ribbon and chevron washi.

I found yet another View Master reel in my October Afternoon stash and an Amy Tan wood veneer camera tag.  Those old negatives will also make a fun and retro border on a page.

And to take the idea of my "Kodachrome" kit even further, I'd like to dig deep into my photo boxes and scrap some of those old color photos that where actually taken with film.

Well, we may no longer have Kodachrome in the mainstream, but we have so many exciting digital photography options and wonderfully colorful scrapbook goodies.  So, go ahead and make a kit and I promise you that Mama will NOT take that away.

Here's the blog hop list I promised you.  Be sure to let us know you stopped by!

Sketchy Business - A Card and a Layout

It's been so much fun creating for Sketches:  Creatively Yours this month.  I'm not normally a card maker, although I should be.  Card making is a great way to use up scraps and have handmade greeting cards at the ready.  Much cheaper than Hallmark!  I guess it's that I'm always pressed for time in the crafting department and my first love IS scrapbooking.  One of these days, I'll make the commitment to make a few cards each month.  It certainly sounds more appealing than walking on the treadmill, which is also on the list!

Anyway,  here is the sketch by Vikki Wittington.

Ali asked us to stick to an Easter theme and here is what I created:

Here's my bunny nestled in some grass...

And if I hurry and get this in the mail tomorrow, it can arrive just in time to my sister!

This is sort of old news, but here's a closer look at the layout I created for the last sketch challenge
at S:  CY.  I had wanted to do a corresponding blog post on my personal blog with the reveal, but time just ran away from me.  Returning to normal after a vacation, a funeral, my daughter's birthday party hosted at home, a spring musical, and daily life in general have kept me hopping this month.  So enough with the excuses...here's the inspiration piece and sketch:

 Proud Peacock is so on-trend.

And here's my interpretation:

The paisleys reminded me of the peacock feathers and I just loved when I had that "a-ha" moment to add the cobalt blue bling.  Now it REALLY looks like the real deal.

Thanks to my scrap bestie, Leslie for the awesome watercolor magazine clipping.  It added to my inspiration.

Downside of using watercolors?  The page does get a little wonky.  I sandwiched it between 2 heavy books and that did help.  However, I found when I put it in a page protector in an album it was hardly noticeable at all.  In the end, I think the effect is worth the wonk!

Thanks again to Ali for the chance to be spotlighted at Sketches:  Creatively Yours.  It's great to have another inspirational feather in my cap!

CKC Challenge #1 - No Journaling Layout

A quick post to show you my first layout from my March Counterfeit Kit, "Penny Candy".

I'm working waayyyy ahead of time (for me anyway) as it is only February 23rd as I write this.  Tomorrow we leave for the airport for our Disney Cruise!  To say I'm excited is quite an understatement.  By the time this posts, we will have only returned the day before, so even though I am typically an "11th hour girl", I know I can't push the limits THAT much!

Our first challenge of the month is to include no journaling on a layout.  Some of you who shy away from journaling may be doing a jig, but I find that to be hard.  I always have SOMETHING to say!  I think the key to success in this type of challenge is to choose photos and embellishments that tell the story for you.  Take a look at what I came up with:

Doesn't the sweetness just ooze from this layout?  It's almost making my teeth sing!  That wide mouth just getting ready to devour that Mickey sundae just says it all.

I created a little vellum heart filled with sweet little bits and bobs.  Glitter, buttons, chipboard pieces all add to the whimsical feel of this layout.

An ice cream cone, placed upside down, mimics the sundae along with the doily that was on my daughter's dish.

And finally, the title and twine pull it all together.  No other words needed.

Now...you'll have to excuse me as I need to pack my bags for a little Disney magic at sea.  Gee, I hope they have those Mickey sundaes on board the ship!

Bon Voyage!
